'Flapjacks from the Sky' Reviewed on AllMusicGuide.com

From AllMusicGuide - review by Thom Jurek

"When New York State's Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams issued its self-titled debut album in 1998, the outré rocking folk ensemble (or is it the other way around?) merely hinted at what they would get up to as they continued to play out in small clubs, tour coffeehouses around the East Coast near and far from their Hudson River Valley home. They grew not only in their ability to command the craft of songwriting, they learned to be entertainers, a show band that could deliver musically, stretching itself to the limit and branching out musically and lyrically..." Angels and Aliens Sighted at Local IHOP

Syracuse, NY
News was made today when a group of extra-terrestrials paid a surprise visit to the Genesee Street International House of Pancakes in Syracuse early this morning. The other-worldly creatures seemed to suddenly "appear out of nowhere" at a booth on the north side of the dining room, and proceeded to place a breakfast order with stunned waitress Molly McMartin. "It was incredible!" McMartin reported, "They were really amazing looking." According to McMartin, and others present at the time, the unusual visitors were apparently delighted by the restaurant's wide variety of pancakes, but appeared to be disappointed that the flapjacks wouldn't play in what appeared to be some sort of walkman stereo. Stan Jayber, local resident and witness to this morning's close encounter exclaimed in a mid-morning interview, "Man, it was awesome! I felt like I was in one of them Shamalam movies or something!". After polishing off their breakfast, the strange silvery-green and blueish visitors vanished in a flourish of colors as suddenly as they had appeared. "The only sign that was left," McMartin explained, "was what appeared to be a message written in the syrup on their empty plates. It looked like it said 'find the circus of dreams'."

Similar reports have come in from other parts of the country in recent weeks, but none quite as substantial as this morning's story from Syracuse. "Who knows," Mr. Jaber mused afterwards, "maybe this is the beginning of a whole new time or something! Man, with visitors from other worlds comin' around like this... I'm pretty psyched!"

Flapjacks CD Release Concert

The Circus would like to thank all of our faithful friends and fans for helping to make our "Flapjacks from the Sky" CD Release Concert & Party such an flippingly overwhelming success!!!

Last Saturday, Feb 21st with short notice and little promotion we managed to sell out the Colleen Duhurst Theater in Mt. Kisco... Over 250 (venue capacity) attended and created an amazing Slambovian Family atmosphere. The band played 15 of the 21 songs from the new album and a splendid time was caused and had by all. Thank you for the standing ovation and for buying sooooo many copies of "Flapjacks."

Special thanks go to the following people:
Kate Goldsmith for an amazing feature article in Taconic Weekend.
Chris & Colleen Ostrowski - for MC-ing, hospitality, front of house and more.
Richard Wolfe for the Moon over Slambovia, lovely cakes, flashing pins and decorations.
Carrie, Andy, Ruby & Lochlan Ziegler - for providing all those wonderful buttery-blue flapjacks and for your warm hospitality.
Jonny and Jeanine Moorhead for an assortment of show prep.
Crystal & Alishia Longo - for front of house, help in the kitchen and overall assistance.
Lisa Grey for help with front of house, crisis management, radio promotion and general overall enthusiasm.
Howie and Eve - for even staying to do the gruntwork.
BC's - for muscles during the loadout.
and The staff @ NWCA/Colleen Duhurst Theater - For providing a wonderful space and support for the show.

We'd also like to thank our special musical guests:
Chen West Longo - Bass guitar
Sir Alistair Farrant - Keyboards
Kolson Pickard - Cornet & Tamborine
Aaron Maine - Trumpet
Mimi Longo - Cowbell and Cello
Joe Longo Jr. - Mandolin

Finally, a hearty "Welcome to Slambovia!" to all the new people who came to see us for the first time.

The band was informed the day of the show by Nanny Longo (Joziah's Ma) that in fact this official "Flapjacks from the Sky" kick off celebration was also the kickoff day for National Pancake week (Feb 21-27). Once again who but the beloved ghosts could've set that up.

We may make it an annual tradition to do a "Flapjacks from the Sky" concert and party during National Pancake Week.

"Flapjacks from the Sky" is available online at CDBABY.COM and is being played by radio stations all over the Northeast like WFUV, WKZE, WVKR, WUMB......... XM and Sirius satellite radio.

Spider Glenn-WEBK DJ said of the album, "Its perfect! A fine job, kids! I give it 6 out of 5 stars. Yes 6 out of 5!!!!!!"

Thanks again everybody, you're the greatest tribe a Circus ever had!

The future is now!
Yers truly,
Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams
